Improvements

Scott Here.

So last Thursday I got a call from a man who lives in Copperton (Mr. Curtis). He has been lobbying for years to get this intersection improved. In fact, On Tuesday moning, the day following the accident, he went to the site and counted cars for about 35 minutes. He counted over 200 vehicles that crossed that intersection. Quite a number when you consider he was there at about 6:30 am.

He mentioned to me that he had a meeting scheduled with Utah State Representative Jim Bird that afternoon. He called Rep. Bird's assistant and got permission for me to attend. In addition to Mr. Curtis (the man from Copperton) there was another citizen that has been pushing for change, and two officials from UDOT.

So here is a synopsis of what was discussed: UDOT's jurisdiction of U-111 ends at New Bingham Highway. Old Bingham and U-111 is under three jurisdictions: Salt Lake County, West Jordan City, and South Jordan City. However, UDOT mentioned that they are conserned with the safety of all Utah roads. UDOT has some discretionary funds that are to be used for safety improvements. They have vowed to allocate some of those funds to SL county to help. They will also work with the county and cities to get this intersection improved to stoplights. They indicated that if the site is "clean" (meaning rights of way have been purchased and there are no utility issues) that a traffic signal could be installed in about four months. We have another meeting scheduled this coming Thursday that will include a representative from Salt Lake County.

Thank you Mr. Curtis for your efforts on this and pulling me into the loop. Thank you Rep. Bird, and the UDOT officials, and Rep. Bird's assistant for all of the scheduling.
